The inspiration for my collection is taken from the tragic romance of my granny's favourite opera 'Madam Butterfly'. A story of love and betrayal unfolds throughout the collection as the Japanese and American cultures collide. Cio Cio San is wrapped and transformed by her unrequited love for U.S. Lieutenant Pinkerton but is tragically set free through death.
The aim for this collection was to recreate the love story between the two main characters of the opera through the evolution of the butterfly. I used my research and imagery of the life cycle of a butterfly and the style of the Japanese to create a clean modern tailored collection with both separate and individual pieces.
